ABSTRACT We aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of tin caulis dendrobium polysaccharide on body weight and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in Sprague-Dawleg rats. The rats were fed a high-fat diet (HFD) with or without tin caulis dendrobium polysaccharide for eight weeks. Body weight, liver function tests, serum and liver lipids, liver morphology, and the expression of PPARγ and UCP2 were assessed. Rats fed HFD exhibited more obvious weight gain, increased serum, and hepatic lipids. But the more tin caulis dendrobium polysaccharide they fed, the lower increase in weight, serum, and hepatic lipids of rats were found. Highly Solvent Tolerance in Serratia marcescens IBBPo15 BABT

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the solvent tolerance mechanisms in Serratia marcescens strain IBBPo15 (KT315653). Serratia marcescens IBBPo15 exhibited remarkable solvent-tolerance, being able to survive in the presence of high concentrations (above 40%) of toxic organic solvents, such as cyclohexane, n-hexane, n-decane, toluene, styrene, and ethylbenzene. S. marcescens IBBPo15 produced extracellular protease and the enzyme production decreased in cells exposed to 5% cyclohexane, n-hexane, toluene, styrene, and ethylbenzene, as compared with the control and n-decane exposed cells. Impact of barrier layer on winter-spring variability of the southeastern Arabian Sea ArchiMer

In the present study, we use a coupled model to evaluate the effect of shallow salinity stratification on the sea surface temperature (SST) and on the monsoon onset in the southeastern Arabian Sea (SEAS). A 100-year control experiment shows that the coupled model reproduces the main climatic features in this region in terms of SST, precipitation and barrier layer (BL). A 100-year sensitivity experiment (where BL effects have been suppressed in the SEAS) shows that BL enhances the spring SST warming by 0.5 degrees C, and leads to a statistically significant increase of precipitation in May (3 mm/day) linked to an early (10 to 15 days) monsoon onset. An experiment was conducted in a growth chamber to evaluate characteristics of the rhizosphere of maize genotypes contrasting in P-use efficiency, by determining length and density of root hairs, the rhizosphere pH and the functional diversity of rhizosphere bacteria. A sample of a Red Oxisol was limed and fertilized with N, K and micronutrients. In the treatment with the highest P level, 174 mg kg-1 P was added. Each experimental unit corresponded to a PVC rhizobox filled with 2.2 dm-3 soil.
